Fair Isle on My Mind

Fair Isle - Wikitravel

The older I get, the more I fuss.  It's 10 days before I leave for my month on Fair Isle, and I have plenty else to be getting on with, but oh no, I fuss instead.  Will the airline that shall remain nameless that flies from Aberdeen to Sumburgh notice that my carry on laptop case is 1.5 centimetres too big in one direction?  (It's lots of centimetres smaller in the other directions - surely that counts?)  They offer me 6 kg for hand luggage and I'm taking under 4 - will they therefore forgive the pesky excess centimetre and a half?  Is my house really, as in last night's nightmare, a wooden shack with no doors and full to the brim of people?  (Population on Fair Isle is currently 55, and I'm pretty sure they were all there.)  Will the weather sock in and keep me from getting from Shetland Mainland to the Isle for weeks and weeks and weeks, until it's time to just turn around and come home?  Is it obsessive to keep checking the weather forecast for Aberdeen and Lerwick and Fair Isle on a daily basis?  (All right, several times a day.)  Is it too early to do a trial pack to see if I can get everything in under the weight limit for the 7-seater plane?

Actually, forget that question.  I've already started ...

You are your mother's daughter. I, on the other hand, have already started packing for a trip to Cuba on February 4th!!!

Of course it’s normal for (a Lennon) to worry, dream, fuss ... but who knew it got worse? I solve the problem of packing anxiety by travellling less, to leave room for worries and fussing to centre on home issues, the hot water heater, the car, and anything else that floats into view.
IT WILL BE LOVELY, in ways not unrelated to the time spent worrying.

Family support - it's a thing.

I think I'd go for a packing try-out and check sometime now, casually whistling all the while, just so your things can get used to the idea of going. Also, I looked for FairIsle webcams but couldn't find any - and hope you weren't booked to stay in the burned-down bird observatory. Worry part of the process perhaps.

That was a real blow to the community but they're already rebuilding and hoping to reopen in summer 2021. I'm staying here: https://www.fairislestudio.com/lowerleoghcroft - my gorgeous little blue house! Has doors and everything!

I can fully relate! I've held onto my excitement until I purchased my plane/Northlink tickets a short time ago and now I am worthless because all I can do is research and plan for the trip. I was too worried about flights not making it and luggage size that I opted to fly to Aberdeen and take the ferry as we'd done before. I'm booked for the Fair Isle/Lerwick trip on the way back and now that you've taken it, you know why I'm very nervous about that decision! lol.

After 2 days of cancelled flights from Tingwall, there was a tiny window of opportunity to take the Good Shepherd from Gurtness. Take the boat in the middle of winter in iffy weather bracketed by bad weather? I said. Sure! I said. Oh my ...

Sorry - that was unnecessarily negative - May is NOT February! And the Fair Isle boat going in to Lerwick instead of Gurtness is way better. And the weight limitations on the plane ARE tough when you're coming for a month. BUT IT WILL ALL WORK OUT! It will.
